MOONLIGHT

Chiron is a character of few words. Why is this?
This is because of the fact he wasn't appreciated by his mother who is a crack head. He hasn't gained enough confidence to talk to people comfortably.

How do the three actors use body language to communicate Chiron’s emotions to the audience? They all take a while to think about what they say before they say it because they think that others will criticise them for being who they are. Their heads are usually down most of the time portraying lack of confidence in social situations. Finally, they spend alot of time thinking about things alone showing they are closed up people.

Why is he reluctant to make eye contact with people?
As said before he definitely lacks social communication skills because of the fact he was bullied for being a "faggot" when in reality he didn't know what it means. His mother doesn't spend time with him at home so she can't teach him how to be comfortable around others, he even looks down around his own mother.

Did anything about the Miami setting surprise you, compared to its party image in popular culture?
Miami in the general media is portrayed as a place of joy, experience and peaceful. However, in Moonlight it's portrayed as almost as dangerous as Compton. In this sense Miami represents a bad "hood" environment for people mainly black people.

How does the saturated colour capture the image of the city the filmmakers are trying to convey?
The main colour scheme used in Moonlight is a very dim, dull cinema looks rather than bright contrasting imagery. I think they are trying to reinforce the fact that Miami is a dangerous place aswell rather than the bright party environment it's known for.

What is the significance of Juan?
He is a significant character as he was somewhat of a father figure to Chiron. It was essential for Chiron to be around Juan due to the fact he can learn alot about life and learn how to become a man and survive his bullies.

How is his influence felt over the entire film, despite the fact he is only present in the first chapter?
His influence stayed on Chiron throughout the whole film as he structure a foundation of Chiron's identity. Similarly to Juan Chiron became a drug dealer also similarly they both regreted it. When you watch Chiron you see Juan more than you think.

Several key sequences take place on the beach, or near the ocean. Why do you think the filmmakers centred so much of the film around this location?
They emphasise this location as its a setting of escapism for Chiron. In the first chapter, it's where Juan  took Chiron to have fun away from his dull childhood life. In the second chapter it's where Chiron made love with the first person.
As well as the fact it shows elements of the city of Miami.

Did anything about Chiron in the final chapter surprise you?
Yes, the fact he became a dominant character surprised me. In the first two chapters he was a soft character with a slim body to show it. However, he became more masculine with a built body to show it. His personality became more "hood" like, because he was drug dealing and carrying a gun on him.

To what extent do you think he is being true to “himself” before and after his reunion with Kevin?
After he met Kevin for the second time his natural personality came back to being nice as his attraction for Kevin came back. also because Kevin was the first boy to let him touch him sexually, Chiron true sexulaty came back to take over his covered self image.

What did you make of his various nicknames?
If the nicknames were "faggot" or similar words, I think it'd cruel on the behalf of Chiron as he was only a kid when he was called this.
